1) Use Google https://maps.meMaps or Maps.me to download offline maps of the country or region you are visiting. This is important because in many places you won’t have cellular data.

2) If you’re a hiker, download offline maps using Wikiloc or AllTrails so you’ll have access to hiking trails when you don’t have data.

3) Download the public transit or private car sharing app (eg Uber, Lyft, CarGo, etc) for the country you’re visiting as often taxis are not safe or cost effective options.

4) If you plan to stay in hostels, use an app like Hostelworld to find the best rated hostels.

5) Use social media (eg Instagram) and follow hashtags for the country or region you’re visiting to get ideas of places to visit. Connect with locals and ask them where you should visit.
