Is Serbian cuisine healthy?

Some of you who have known me for a long time, know that I was previously a very BIG guy. After 15 months in Costa Rica on a healthy diet and workout routine, I lost almost 50 pounds (25kg). I’m disappointed to report that I might’ve gained it back thanks to Serbian cuisine. 😅

I hope I didn’t gain it back here in Serbia 😬

In short, Serbian food is unadulterated meat and lots of it! 😋 Almost every restaurant will serve grilled meat and there are many fast food type places that serve delicious grilled sausages, patties (Pljeskavica) and grilled meat sticks (ćevapi). The good news is that lean protein is not bad. We just have to watch the serving sizes and the breads and spreads.

This is an example of a mixed meat plate served with delicious pita bread, fries and a Serbian salad.

Are there healthy options? Serbian Salad (shopska) – Do you like Greek salad? The Serbian salad is very similar with cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and onions (#onioneatingchampion). Often it is topped with cheese and is quite delicious.

What is Kajmak? Kajmak is a delicious but tasty spread made from unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk. It can be spread on the bread or with the meat. I highly recommend trying this.

In summary, the Serbian cuisine is healthy, delicious and extremely affordable! There are many other dishes I tried for which I don’t recall the names. There are also many stews or soups which are consumed in the Winter time.

Have you tried Serbian cuisine and if so, what are some of your favorite dishes? 🤔😋
